It’s designed to handle every major part of semiconductor assembly under one roof, including wafer fabrication, memory production, and advanced packaging. The initial prototype “mini-factory” will be built on the North Campus of Tesla’s Giga Texas Site.

Once fully scaled, the semiconductor manufacturing facility will supply over 1 TW of computing power. For context, that’s roughly equivalent to 1,000 nuclear power plants running at full capacity or the average electricity consumed by 1 billion households.

Everything will be built on 2 nm technology, achieving higher transistor density over the 3 nm process, delivering about 15% faster processing speeds with around 30% less energy draw. In simple terms, it’s all about processing data faster while consuming less power.

So, how will this computing power be distributed? 20% will be allocated to Tesla’s “Robotaxi” deployments and “Optimus Gen 3” projects, while 80% will be allocated to SpaceX’s “Orbital Data Centers.”

We imagine space as a freezing cold void. In reality, it’s an airless heat prison. The only viable path to remove heat is through radiation, meaning every watt of electricity consumed by GPUs must be converted into infrared light and beamed away into the void. SpaceX’s D3 Chip is architected to run hotter so the heat “sprays” out via thermal pressure.

The increased compute capacity will help power research initiatives like defeating “Nondeterminism”: when LLMs produce different outputs from the same input due to inherent randomness.

Traditional computers store all kinds of information as binary data: a distinct sequence of 0s and 1s. For example, 100 in binary is 1100100. But LLMs don’t deal with whole numbers, they deal with decimal numbers. For example, when given: “The cat sat on the {BLANK}!” LLMs might predict “{MAT}” → 0.81, “{ROOF}” → 0.13, and “{MOON}” → 0.06.

To store these decimal numbers, they rely on FP Arithmetic, which is similar to scientific notation but in binary. But here’s the catch: a decimal number like 0.81 doesn’t have an exact FP Arithmetic. It’s like trying to convert 1/3 into decimal form: 0.3333....repeats indefinitely. So, it must be rounded.

It isn’t perfectly precise, with tiny rounding errors baked into every calculation. LLMs perform billions of calculations, so these tiny rounding errors add up, especially when GPUs rearrange the order of these decimal numbers when processing them in parallel.

Imagine ordering the same cup of coffee every day at your favorite coffee shop, but it tastes different depending on how busy the barista is. Why?! Because the barista has to juggle multiple coffee orders at once.

That’s exactly what’s happening here. When Gemini, Claude, and ChatGPT handle large amounts of prompts simultaneously, GPUs efficiently process them in batches. But this batching, paired with tiny rounding errors baked into every calculation, can change the quality of how your prompt is processed.
