GenAI earbuds startup “iyO” just filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against OpenAI’s “io” for sounding too alike.
Key Details:
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Legendary Apple Designer Jony Ive recently announced “io,” a new company focused on creating innovative AI Hardware.
OpenAI acquired “io” for $6.5 billion, gaining Ive’s team of 55 designers, architects, and engineers. “io” plans to build AI-powered devices that create less socially disruptive experiences.
OpenAI also recently applied for a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which lists “smart jewelry” for “AI-assisted interaction and simulation.”
Over the weekend, OpenAI was forced to remove all promotional materials related to “io” in order to comply with a court order.
“iyO” alleges that “io” met with them to discuss their in-ear technology, even purchasing the iyO One: GenAI earbuds designed to be the world’s first audio computer.
Why It’s Important:
This trademark infringement lawsuit forced “io” to reveal that OpenAI’s AI Hardware won’t resemble “an in-ear device.”
If “iyO’s” claims of prior discussions with “io” are substantiated, OpenAI could face reputation risks or even legal penalties, underscoring the growing tension in the race to enter the AI Hardware market, which is projected to reach $72.77 billion by 2029.
