WAYMO

🚖Waymo’s Cars Are Better Drivers Than You?

Waymo published a “Safety Impact” website that offers data-driven insight into how self-driving cars are safer than human drivers.

Key Details:
  • The Waymo Driver is “already making roads safer in the places we currently operate.”

  • The Waymo Driver has over 22 million miles of real-world driving experience in Phoenix, AZ, and San Francisco, CA.

  • Compared to a human driver with the same miles in the same locations, Waymo achieves:

    1. 84% Fewer Airbag Deployment Crashes

    2. 73% Fewer Injury-Causing Crashes

    3. 48% Fewer Police-Reported Crashes

  • The Waymo Driver leverages a network of cameras, Radar, LiDAR, and Computer Vision to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings constantly.

  • Computer Vision enables computers to interpret, analyze, and extract visual data.

  • The Waymo Driver also employs large volumes of Neural Networks (NNs) trained through driving data, such as handling turns, obstacles, and speed adjustments.

  • Neural Networks (NNs) recognize patterns in driving data to make real-time decisions for safer navigation.

Why It’s Important:
  • These safety statistics are crucial as Waymo rapidly scales up self-driving services to more than 100,000 rides per week.

  • The “Safety Impact” website suggests self-driving cars reduce airbag deployments, prevent injury crashes, and lower police-reported accidents.

OPENAI

🧪OpenAI Backs Drug Discovery Startup

OpenAI and Thrive Capital invested nearly $30 million into Chai Discovery, a drug discovery startup that leverages AI to develop new medicines.

Key Details:
  • Thrive Capital is an investment firm that builds and invests in internet, software, and technology-enabled companies.

  • Chai Discovery recently launched “Chai-1,” a multimodal AI model that predicts molecular structures.

  • “Chai-1” employs Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to analyze data represented in Graphs.

  • Graphs are composed of nodes (e.g., a person, place or thing) and edges (i.e., the relationships between nodes).

  • “Chai-1” can understand molecular structures represented as graphs with atoms (i.e., nodes) and bonds (i.e., edges).

Why It’s Important:
  • Google DeepMind’s “AlphaFold 3” is considered the pinnacle of predicting the structure and interactions of all of life’s molecules.

  • “AlphaFold 3” achieved a 76% success rate on the PoseBusters benchmark, which validates the chemical and geometric consistency of a ligand (i.e., a molecule or ion that binds to a central atom or ion). However, “Chai-1” achieved a 77% success rate.

AI RESEARCH

🧠LLMs Generate Novel Research Ideas

Image Source: Stanford University (SU)/“Can LLMs Generate Novel Research Ideas?”

Researchers investigated whether Large Language Models (LLMs) could generate novel research ideas in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP).

LLMs are AI models pre-trained on vast amounts of data to generate human-like text.

NLP is the ability of computer programs to understand, interpret, and generate human language.

Over 100 human experts were recruited to write novel ideas and review an LLM ideation agent’s novel ideas.

A blind comparison of the human expert’s novel ideas and the LLM ideation agent’s novel ideas determined that LLM-generated ideas are more novel.

However, the LLM ideation agent’s novel ideas often lacked feasibility compared to the human expert’s novel ideas.

This study highlights the power of LLMs as a tool for research ideation but also underscores the need for human expertise to ensure feasibility.
