WAYMO

🚗Waymo’s Realistic Agents For Self-Driving Systems

Waymo, an autonomous driving technology company, launched a new simulator for the driverless car community to train intelligent agents.

Key Details:
  • Autonomous vehicle companies leverage simulators to train self-driving systems with specialized agents. These agents act as pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signals, and cars to create realistic environments for self-driving cars.

  • Waymo tackles issues with creating and training intelligent agents to simulate realistic environments for autonomous vehicles.

  • Head of Research, Drago Anguelov, described the central bottleneck with simulators: “Traditional simulators have predefined agents with scripts on how the agent is supposed to behave, but not necessarily how it will behave.”

  • On Thursday, Waymo unveiled Waymax, an accelerated, “lightweight,” data-driven simulator for large-scale autonomous driving research. “Lightweight” refers to a clean environment with a road graph and bounding boxes as agents with tailored attributes.

  • Removing the realistic-looking ecosystem and providing the essential functions allows researchers to prioritize improving complex behaviors among multiple road users rather than being concerned with how the environment appears.

Why It’s Important:
  • Agents must behave and react realistically to self-driving cars and each other to achieve advanced autonomous vehicle systems.

  • The Waymo Open Dataset and Waymax simulator could aid improvements in reinforcement learning (i.e., agents make decisions by interacting with the environment and receiving feedback through rewards or penalties), leading to driverless cars displaying emergent behavior (i.e., a property of complex systems where interactions between the components lead to unexpected outcomes).

OPENAI

🧨OpenAI Abandons Arrakis Model

OpenAI reportedly abandoned the launch of the Arrakis Model. An AI tool inspired by the dystopian desert world of science-fiction film “Dune.”

Key Details:
  • Arrakis references the hellish planet from Frank Herbert’s “Dune” novel. It forms the central focal point of the story, with Arrakis containing the vital resource “spice” in the universe.

  • The Arrakis model was built to power AI applications like ChatGPT more cheaply. The company abandoned the project after it struggled to meet efficiency expectations.

  • OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft provided the company access to the Azure platform. Executives at Microsoft were disappointed by the shortcomings of Arrakis.

Why It’s Important:
  • AI models that power applications like ChatGPT are expensive, resource-intensive, and prone to bias. They require computing power from cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, costing more than $700,000 daily.

  • Despite the surging growth, the Arrakis project highlights a rare setback for OpenAI. CEO Sam Altman reportedly claims his company is on pace to generate $1.3B in yearly revenue.
