📖 Wikipedia’s Overdue Payday?

Wikipedia announced a series of paid licensing deals with Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity AI after years of being pillaged.
Key Details:
Wikipedia receives almost 10,000 pageviews every second from around the world. Around May 2025, they observed unusually high levels of what appeared to be human traffic, mostly originating from Brazil. Turns out it was from crawler bots, designed to gather information from websites to train frontier AI models.
After reclassifying the human traffic to exclude these crawler bots, they noticed an 8% decrease in human pageviews on Wikipedia from March 2025 to August 2025 when compared to the same time period last year.
As of June 2025, Wikipedia was the most frequently cited source within ChatGPT, appearing in up to 48% of the conversational chatbot’s top 10 citations.
Why It’s Important:
The “free internet” just got more expensive. Wikipedia’s been the backbone of the open web for over two decades. If even Wikipedia’s charging to survive, that’s a clear indicator that the old arrangement of take-first, pay-never has finally collapsed.
These paid licensing deals set a precedent that well-curated human knowledge has massive monetary value. Reddit signed a data licensing agreement with Google worth $60 million annually for having the largest open archive of relevant and authentic human discussions.

xAI activated “Colossus 2,” the world’s first fully operational gigawatt data center to train, develop, and deploy advanced AI models.
Key Details:
“Colossus 2” is powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell Architecture. It reportedly features approximately 555,000 NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell Superchips, consuming around 1 GW of electricity continuously. For context, that’s roughly equivalent to the electricity consumed by 100 million LED bulbs.
A NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell Superchip typically consists of 2 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, 1 NVIDIA Grace CPU, and NVLink interconnect, all designed as a tightly coupled high-performance compute unit.
That means approximately 555,000 NVIDIA GB200 Blackwell Superchips correspond to the performance of about 1.1 million Blackwell GPUs.
Why It’s Important:
America’s power grid infrastructure isn’t designed to handle the sudden surge in energy consumption from advanced AI models. Across nearly a million average U.S. homes, more than half of them within a 20-mile service area of data centers experience Bad Harmonics: a less-than-ideal flow of electricity that promotes blackouts and electrical fires.
xAI installed dozens of methane gas turbines to produce more energy, which normally requires air quality permits to ensure air pollution levels are monitored. By claiming they’re “temporary,” xAI leveraged a legal loophole that bypasses this environmental criteria. Now, the EPA has moved to close this policy workaround.
