🦾Tesla’s Optimus Robot Autonomously Sorts Objects

Tesla recently announced that Optimus, its humanoid robot, can officially sort objects autonomously to perform unsafe, repetitive, or tedious tasks.

Key Details:

• Optimus can self-calibrate its arms and legs using vision and joint position encoders.

• Its neural network is trained fully end-to-end: video in, controls out. For example, Optimus can sort blocks by color while dealing with the dynamic reality of our world (e.g., a moving hand removing sorted blocks).

• Elon Musk explained, “Optimus is designed to be an extremely capable robot made in very high volumes—probably, ultimately, millions of units.”

Why It’s Important:

• Like the latest versions of Full Self-Driving, Tesla is leveraging neural networks end-to-end to build software stacks that enable balance, navigation, perception, and interaction with the physical world.

• Optimus appears very fluid and natural, with dexterity and movements. Are the neural nets trained with human movement?

🗣OpenAI’s ChatGPT Adds Verbal Communication

OpenAI unveiled a multimodel voice and image-based search engine for ChatGPT, transforming how users interact with generated information.

Key Details:

• OpenAI integrated a voice-based assistant into ChatGPT’s Large Language Model (LLM), allowing customers to ask ChatGPT to recite answers verbally. For example, users can tell ChatGPT to generate and recite a bedtime story.

• Customers can also use the open-source chatbot to search for answers using images. For instance, a user can upload a bike photo and ask how to lower the seat.

• The voice feature also provides a new text-to-speech model that generates human-like voices from text and a few seconds of sampled speech.

• OpenAI hired established voice actors to create five voices with a whisper speech recognition system to transcribe verbal utterances into text.

Why It’s Important:

• This new voice technology, capable of crafting realistic synthetic voices from a few seconds of real speech, presents creativity and accessibility-focused applications. However, these capabilities promote potential risks, such as malicious actors impersonating public figures to commit fraud.

• OpenAI deliberately limited ChatGPT’s ability to “analyze and make direct statements about people” for accuracy and privacy reasons. So, the ability to ask ChatGPT, “Who is that?” won’t be available anytime soon.
